Speaking of Device specifications, the new model has been completely redesigned from the ground up, enhancing every aspect of its predecessor. The Switch 2 is noticeably larger, measuring 271.8mm wide and 114.3mm tall, while maintaining its 13.9mm thickness. It weighs 399g with controllers attached and features a significantly larger kickstand for better tabletop use. It also includes two USB-C ports(bottom and top), enhancing connectivity.
The Switch 2 sports a 7.9-inch LCD screen with a 1920×1080 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. Although it now supports HDR10, the lack of an OLED panel might disappoint some users, potentially setting the stage for a future OLED model.
Docked mode enables 4K output at 60Hz and 1080p/1440p at up to 120Hz. The dock also includes active cooling to prevent performance throttling and supports HDR10 output, offering enhanced visuals on compatible TVs.
With 256GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD Express cards up to 2TB), the Switch 2 addresses one of the original’s biggest limitations. It also features Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth, and Ethernet support (via dock). Audio upgrades include enhanced built-in speakers, 3D audio support, and 5.1 PCM output when docked.
The new Joy-Con 2 controllers, predominantly black with colored highlights, utilize magnetic attachment and feature larger SL/SR buttons and analog sticks. A key upgrade is their ability to function as a mouse in supported games, with Nintendo showcasing updates to existing titles and new games designed around this feature.
A major new software feature is GameChat, allowing players to voice chat using the built-in microphone. A dedicated C button on the Joy-Con 2 activates the feature, enabling screen sharing and even video calls using the new Nintendo Switch 2 Camera accessory (sold separately for $49.99). GameChat will be free until March 31, 2026, after which a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required.
The console supports backward compatibility with most Switch games, with select titles receiving paid “Switch 2 Edition” upgrades for improved visuals and performance.
