WWE 2K25 Review: Best-ish in the World , Urdu Wirsa

New year means a new WWE 2K video game to look forward to. WWE 2K25 is here with promises of noticeable gameplay enhancements, the biggest roster of superstars, a new Showcase, and a completely fresh game mode. While recent releases like WWE 2K22 and WWE 2K23 were good enough, last year’s WWE 2K24 is the one that set the benchmark for 2K. It offered engaging gameplay, smooth performance, realistic character models, and a wide range of arenas.

Now, the question is can this year’s iteration do better? Or is it worth your money and time? Let’s find out the answers to these questions and more in this WWE 2K25 review.

WWE 2K25 Review: Gameplay Changes

Third-Person Camera

WWE 2K25 looks and plays like WWE 2K24 for most of the part, but whatever changes 2K has made are worth the applause. The newly introduced third-person camera option is my absolute favourite. It adds a whole new layer of fun to the gameplay experience, beating the repetitive nature of the game. It gives you control of the camera. This means you can move it around the superstar, ring, and arena using the right analog stick.

It helps you get closer to the action and offers new ways to experience entrances, fights, finishers, or any other move you pull off. Hell in a Cell, Elimination Chamber, and Steel Cage matches now feel like you are locked inside the cage. It’s something that you have to try out to understand the depth of it. This is a nice add-on, one that has excited me the most.

Bloodline Rules Match

The next new addition that I enjoyed the most was the Bloodlines Rules match. It is a no-disqualification match where everything and anything goes. Literally. Both players can call out up to three allies during the match to help boost their winning chances. These allies are completely random which means you have no idea which wrestler from backstage will turn up to help.

As more and more allies enter the ring, it quickly turns into a Mumbai local train equivalent. But, this chaos is what brings the fun element into the game.

Intergender Matches

For the first time in WWE 2K games history, you can play intergender matches. It means you can finally pit “Mami” Rhea Ripley against “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio or “The Man” Becky Lynch against “Visionary” Seth “Freakin” Rollins. Intergender matches can be held in all major match types, including the Royal Rumble and Battle Royal. You can now also have tag team matches where male and female wrestlers can fight each other, unlike traditional mixed tag matches that require wrestlers of the same gender in the ring.

Chain Wrestling

WWE 2K25 marks the return of chain wrestling, a staple of real-world wrestling matches. It often takes place during the early moments of a match. It is an exchange of holds/grapples and transitions between different moves as each wrestler looks to gain an advantage over the opponent.

It can be triggered through grapples or by holding the circle button while performing a Grab. This will kick off a mini-game where you have to choose if you want to wrench, attack, or switch to a new hold. Next, use the left analog stick to find the hidden hotspot and fill the meter before your opponent. It takes a while to get used to the mechanism but once you do, it is easier to trigger and complete.

Other Changes

You can now see the damage inflicted on your opponent’s body and vice versa as the match progresses. WWE 2K25 superstars now have bruises to show during and after the match. Blood gets smeared on the wrestling mat and around the ring, depending on your movements as it would in a real-life match.

WWE 2K25 finally lets you throw weapons by pressing the circle button. Wrestlers can now climb on the ringside barricades to walk on and perform various attacks. If barricades have LEDs, you will see them getting damaged and pixelated if you slam the opponent into them. The game also has a dedicated learning centre named Performance Center to help you learn these gameplay mechanics and moves.

}

Backstage Brawl matches now have two arenas: WWE Archives and NXT Parking Lot. I loved the former the most as it allows you to use various WWE nostalgic props like climbing up and jumping off the iconic SmackDown Fist. Underground is a new match type where wrestlers fight in a ring with four pillars and no ropes. You have an audience surrounding the ring, like underground fights in the movie Fight Club. These matches can be won only via knockout, submission, or disqualification.

As far as the AI is concerned, it still produces moments where you are left baffling and scratching your head, especially in matches featuring multiple wrestlers. The good thing is that I encountered those incidents rarely and never felt like quitting or throwing away my controller.

WWE 2K25 Review: Game Modes

The Island

The Island is a new mode introduced in WWE 2K25. It takes place at Roman Reigns’ “Island of Relevancy” where players are invited to compete and try their luck at winning a WWE contract. It is essentially like a theme park divided into four districts. Your character can move around the whole island and the districts to meet WWE superstars and get quests. Each quest has wrestling matches that you have to win to proceed. Each match further has various challenges like hitting a move or doing a reversal “x” number of times.

These quests and challenges give you XPs and VCs. The latter is an in-game currency required for upgrading a player’s attributes and overall rating. It is also needed to purchase in-game cosmetic items through shops like Nike, WWE Shop, Jordan, and iSlide. The mode further has online support where you can fight against other players.

}

}
#tdi_3_3c7 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item7 {

}
#tdi_3_3c7 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item8 {

}

background: url( 0 0 no-repeat;
}
#tdi_3_3c7 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item10 {
background: url( 0 0 no-repeat;
}

There is a five-tier leaderboard: Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. You earn Rank Points for winning matches, but if you lose, your points will drop. However, during my time, I could not find anyone online to match up and fight against.

The Island has a lot of people moving around, areas, and items to explore, but there is no voice acting. You have to read everything, even when interacting with quest-givers, and the whole experience becomes a tedious task. VCs earned through matches and challenges are not enough. You will have to rely on in-game purchases to be able to upgrade players and buy good items. Even the quests were not enticing enough for me to return to the Island once I was done exploring.

All in all, it is nothing but 2K’s attempt at making you want to spend your hard-earned money. This mode is exclusive to next-gen consoles, and trust me, PC and old-gen console players are not missing out on anything.

Showcase

This year’s WWE 2K Showcase revolves around the Bloodline Dynasty. It puts you in the shoes of various Anoa’i, Fatu, and Maivia family superstars over the decades like Rikishi, Yokozuna, Umaga, The Rock, and Nia Jax. “The Wiseman” Paul Heyman is the host as he takes you through the history and events leading up to a particular match in the Showcase.

2K has bid farewell to the Slingshot tech and mid-match cinematics are now animated. I love this change as it keeps the immersion intact. Showcase now has full entrances and match commentary which is another welcome change. For the first time, you can change the result of select matches that Bloodline members lost in the real-world storyline.

This is where the fun part of the Showcase ends for me. I have never enjoyed Showcase because it is more about reading and completing match objectives than actually playing and enjoying the match. If you fail to complete even one objective, you miss out on all Objective Rewards.

To make matters worse, there are now timer objectives that you need to complete in a specific time duration. You are always at the mercy of AI actions if you want to complete those. Overall, Showcase is still a big to-do list, and a single misstep means starting over.

MyRise

This year’s MyRise has a unified story called Mutiny featuring both male and female stars. It revolves around a group of superstars who have taken over NXT. They start infiltrating Raw and SmackDown in an attempt to establish NXT as the WWE brand. Your goal is to stop the mutiny and protect the business.

You start by creating a main character and after a while, you are asked to create a second star of the opposite gender. Each gender has its own storyline to follow that converges with the main storyline. When not playing a particular storyline, you can switch between genders to participate in Live Event matches. This is a new addition where you fight in Live Event matches to earn attribute points and rewards. It is a completely optional activity and not mandatory for finishing the story.

#tdi_4_356 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item1 {
background: url( 0 0 no-repeat;
}
#tdi_4_356 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item2 {

}
#tdi_4_356 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item3 {
background: url( 0 0 no-repeat;
}
#tdi_4_356 .td-doubleSlider-2 .td-item4 {
background: url( 0 0 no-repeat;
}

WWE 2K25 MyRise offers Decision Branches at different moments in the story. Your choices will dictate the future course of the storyline and what superstars/legends you will interact with. This means you can replay MyRise to make different choices to experience different storylines and endings. The best part is you can choose to replay the story with existing characters while maintaining their overall ratings.

Universe and MyGM

The biggest addition to Universe mode this year is the return of Promos. You can now choose superstars to cut promos to start a rivalry or build up an existing one. There are five types of promos, including issuing and accepting an open challenge. Promos have animations of the stars but without voiceovers. It is the commentary that talks about what’s going on.

You can now assign up to three different shows on a single day. It is also possible to have two day PLEs but the second day should take place within four weeks of the first day. Both days will have an equal number of matches and one star can be booked for only one day.

MyGM mode has also received notable improvements this year. Players can now choose whether the winner will be decided based on the number of fans or trophies. Trophy requirements for triggering the Hall of Fame can also be chosen. The mode now offers the complete roster of active stars for WWE Draft instead of a randomly selected group. Extreme difficulty now requires you to book five matches every week.

You now have 19 GMs to choose from which is nearly double the count in WWE 2K24. The NXT Mutiny brand from MyRise is also part of the mode. WWE 2K25 has added cross-brand PLEs to MyGM and special PLE Power Cards. These cards can be won only if stars from your brand win matches. MyGM can be played online this year with friends but I could not try it as I do not have friends with WWE 2K25 yet.

MyFaction

MyFaction is still the same as the previous year. It is all about opening card packs in the hope of earning highest rated WWE superstar cards. Your goal is to create the strongest possible squad aka Faction and compete with others. The new addition here is the World Tour, where you have to visit different locations to complete challenges. It is nothing but a money-grab scheme, similar to FUT in EA Sports FC games. I have never cared about this mode and this year is no different.

Verdict

It can be difficult to offer noticeable improvements and keep a game feel fresh when you are releasing it every year. The good thing is that 2K has managed to do that to a large extent with WWE 2K25. The new additions like a third-person camera, intergender matches, and new match types/areas make it so much more fun to play. Modes like Showcase, Universe, and MyGM have received improvements that their respective fans would appreciate.

2K looked at WWE 2K24, kept everything that made it so good, and added things that were missing except for ‘The Island’. It is surely a mode that no one asked for and is unlikely that anyone would care about it unless you are one of the 2K shareholders. It is all about microtransactions and even if you are willing to spend money, this mode does not have enough content to keep you engaged.

There is no doubt in my mind that WWE 2K25 is the best WWE game from 2K yet as long as you ignore certain money-grabbing modes. It is the right time to upgrade for anyone who has not purchased a 2K release in recent times. However, I would suggest waiting for price drops to get better value for money. If you already own WWE 2K24, there is no need to get it immediately either.

WWE 2K25 is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Windows. It is priced at Rs 4,999 for the Standard Edition on the PlayStation Store.
