Design and Installation
The installation process is quite simple on the PlayStation 5. Removing the side panels will expose the M.2 slot. Post that, it’s just playing around with the screws and then plugging in the SN850P. If you prefer watching the process, WD and PlayStation have official videos up on their channels.
The WD Black SN850P is a standard M.2 drive that uses the 2280 form factor. This means that the SSD can also be used on your PC. That said, the bulky heatsink will cause a little trouble with some motherboard’s included heatsink cover. While it’s largely the same as the SN850 and the SN850X, the ‘P’ in the SN850P stands for PlayStation. This means that WD and Sony have worked together to ensure that the SSD sits comfortably inside the PS5. But, there’s really nothing different about it, just a badge of reassurance.
The SN850P doesn’t really depart much from the SN850X’s design language. It introduces a few more crevices to slightly deal with the heat better. Besides this, the only major design change is the official PlayStation logo on the heatsink.
Performance and Transfer Speeds
Much like its appearance, the SN850P performs similarly to the SN850X. While WD advertises a read speed of 7,300MB/s, PS5’s built-in benchmark came up with a read speed of 6,512MB/s during installation. These speeds are not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but when you are splurging premium money, you would expect to get the full meal. That said, this is just a benchmark. In practical usage, the SN850P has proved to be a flagship with fast transfer rates.

The boot speeds do not see any significant improvements, with games like Astro Bot and God of War Ragnarok starting one second faster than the console storage. But, the SN850P has managed to transfer huge games within seconds — putting The Flash to shame.

The write speeds on the SN850P are simply insane. It barely took a 110GB weighing game 39 seconds to move from the console storage to the drive. A 36GB Astro Bot file took the SN850P merely 16 seconds to finish transferring. That’s faster than some of my friend’s reflexes when playing Counter-Strike 2. What’s crazier is that a 246GB game took barely under 17 minutes to fully transfer. That’s just wild. If you are confused as to why the transfer from SSD to the console is significantly different — that’s because the PS5’s built-in storage’s write speeds are comparatively slower.
Verdict
As of writing this piece, the SN850P’s price has considerably come down from what it used to be. So, that makes it slightly easier to recommend this for someone who needs a fast and no-nonsense drive for their PS5 or even a gaming PC. But, that’s also where the SN850X comes in.
Now, the speeds above are not very different from what the SN850X can come up with, and that too at Rs 4,200 lesser price. But if you are someone who dabbles with only the official merch, the SN850P might suit you.
