What is D2M Technology?
Direct to Mobile, or D2M, is a broadcasting technology where signals are transmitted using base stations, similar to how FM Radio works. These base stations will be set up at different locations across India, which will distribute live TV signals, emergency alerts, and also let users stream OTT content. It also supports sending and receiving messages.
A D2M-enabled phone can connect to the nearest base station and stream all of these services without internet connectivity. It’s like using a radio but with advanced video streaming abilities.
D2M technology uses a fixed spectrum of 470- 582MHz of terrestrial broadcast waves, which is different than the 4G and 5G spectrum used in India for wireless communications. Hence, it will help to reduce congestion and stress on 4G and 5G services, as users can stream live TV, cricket matches, sports, and other events using D2M instead of traditional telecom networks.
Implementing D2M on a phone requires additional hardware with a designated receiver antenna. Hence, we will see a new category of D2M phones, similar to how we saw with the introduction of 4G and 5G phones in the last decade.
However, D2M will be mainly targeted towards feature phones to connect users who don’t have access to 4G and other internet connectivity. It is very unlikely for this technology to arrive on Android smartphones.
Lava To Introduce D2M Phones in May
Lava has partnered with Tejas Networks (formerly Saankhya Labs) and Free Stream Technologies to manufacture phones with D2M support. These two companies are the pioneers in this field and have developed the technology locally in India at IIT Kanpur.
The D2M-enabled phone by Lava will feature the MediaTek MT6261 processor. It will also have the SL3000 receiver chip from Saankhya Labs, along with a dedicated UHF antenna to receive live TV signals. The phone will get a 2.8-inch QVGA display.
Lava’s D2M phone will support GSM connectivity for voice calling. The device will get a 2200mAh battery. Lava will also be using Saankhya Labs SDK (Software Development Kit) to offer a seamless streaming experience to users.
The company has also shared some official images of the device, which reveal a huge speaker setup. The phone appears to have a micro-USB port, which is a little disappointing.
