It has been a few days since I started using the CMF Phone 2 Pro, and I am convinced that Nothing was genuinely inspired by the beloved long-running series Pokémon. Compared to the previous generation, CMF Phone 1, the latest generation brings a sense of refinement in certain aspects that soon put this series on the conventional map. But will this seemingly new strategy bring prosperity to Nothing, it is hoping for? While the CMF Phone 2 Pro still has to undergo more rigorous testing at the MSP labs, here’s a quick first impression to see what it has to offer.

Design and Display
The major refinement in Nothing’s latest iteration of its CMF Phone can effortlessly be observed in its design department. Picking the CMF Phone 2 Pro for the first time instantly made me realise that the phone had significantly shed its thickness. Moreover, this new generation was comparatively lighter. These modifications align the phone with the new wave of slender smartphones.
From its very inception, Nothing established that its CMF Phone series is all about customisation. So while unboxing the phone, I noticed something peculiar about the additional items in its box. Previously, almost all these items were the back shell, which you could swap with the phone’s original shell. However, this time it only bundled a “Universal” cover with the CMF Phone 2 Pro. This slight shift introduces a significant change in the customisation.

Explaining this cover to you is actually a walk in the park. All you need to do is imagine it as a blank canvas where you can give your phone a makeover. Yes, it attaches over the phone’s existing rear shell. What it does is that it provides a protrusion for fixing a lens cover on top of the camera, and a magnet coil like the iPhone 16 Plus’s MagSafe to let you apply a wallet cum phone stand.
On the left-hand side, the CMF Phone 2 Pro also features the Essential Key, the same one in the Nothing Phone (3a) Pro.
On paper, Nothing has increased the screen size marginally. But, in actuality, I felt I got considerably more screen real estate. Also, it is a lot brighter than its predecessor. I often had to reduce its brightness to watch the One Piece series without straining my eyes. The only similarity between the two phones is their 120Hz refresh rate. While the display has impressed me, it is unfortunate to see the brand continuing to employ a mono speaker for auditory satisfaction. It couldn’t produce enough details to rely on for listening to music. Whenever I consumed content, I had to grab my earbuds.
Cameras
The next major change in the CMF Phone 2 Pro is apparent in its camera module. It is now a full-fledged triple-camera system, unlike the previous version, which featured a primary camera with a portrait sensor.
The 50-megapixel primary camera is present alongside its 50-megapixel 2x telephoto and 8-megapixel ultra-wide brethren.
In my testing, I observed myself utilising the telephoto camera more than the rest. It enabled me to take appealing portrait shots without getting too close to the subject. Additionally, it is tuned to recreate almost true-to-natural colours in its images.

Even without the portrait mode, it added a natural bokeh to images. Speaking of the portrait mode, I noticed that the blur effect would occasionally get too aggressive for my liking, making these photographs look a lot more artificial. I will test the camera further in daylight and low-light conditions to see if this issue occurs more often.
The ultra-wide camera can capture decent images. At times, it retains almost the same colour in its photographs as the scene, which is impressive because its competitors rarely replicate it. Since it is only an 8-megapixel sensor, it fell slightly short of capturing enough details at night.
The main snapper was satisfactory in capturing detailed images. However, it tended to produce comparatively warmer images than its companions, causing the subject’s colours to be somewhat mismatched. Wait for my review as I will check whether this issue is limited to low-light conditions or affects photographs taken in daylight scenarios.
Hardware and Software
The MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Pro chipset handles the CMF Phone 2 Pro’s operations. On the benchmark front, it offers only a marginal improvement over its predecessor’s MediaTek Dimensity 7300.
But it has served me well in my daily usage till now. From watching the Mumbai Indians defeating the Lucknow Super Giants on JioHotstar, scrolling YouTube’s short videos, to a bit of casual gaming, every task occurred swiftly without lag making its appearance.
I am yet to test the phone’s gaming calibre extensively, so stay tuned for that in my full review.

Except for the widgets on the lock screen and the icon feature, I wish Nothing could work on adding more customising features. But for what it’s worth, I’m still swooned over by Nothing OS’ customisation features.
